Some of the finest cathedral cities in the land can be visited in central England.

Gloucester cathedral – a joy to visit.

In the 6th century, the Pope sent Augustus to England as a missionary to convert the population to Christianity.

If you wish to see and hear about the development of the religion in our country from that point to present day, then look no further than Gloucester.

As a busy trading post sitting next to the longest river in Great Britain, the Severn, Gloucester was ideally positioned to have a monastery built in 679 – to house a religious community, but also to allow locals and passing traders to worship.

About 400 hundred years later, along came the Normans.

With the objective of stamping their authority over the newly conquered country, they quickly put their innovative and revolutionary architecture to use. Come to see and hear how Gloucester Cathedral developed from there, starting with the Romanesque architecture of the Normans, through to the Perpendicular style, the last phase of English Gothic architecture. Included in the tour you will see the incredible artistry of the fan vaulting in the cloister, made even more famous because of its use as a location for the Harry Potter films.

This is but a small sample of the joys of visiting Gloucester Cathedral. If you enjoy this, there is plenty more on offer throughout the entire region.
