Also known as the Welsh Marches, this is the land which falls within the counties of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire.
A land full of remote villages, many with the remains of castles. It is a landscape of mountains, hills and river valleys. All dominated by the Rivers Wye and Severn as these mighty waterways wend their way through this mysterious, intriguing but beautiful area. If you are attracted to dramatic scenery, painted by some of the greatest of the British landscape artists, then try this, one of hundreds of walks we can offer:
Offa’s Dyke walking tour
An exploration of the River Wye and of Offa’s Dyke where it runs along the river valley. Here we would see the best-preserved sections of this 8th century earthwork, a symbol of power and authority as well as a formidable obstacle to invaders. We’d walk exactly where Turner and Wordsworth walked and we’d enjoy the unforgettable scenery and views, including those of Tintern Abbey, that so inspired the two of them and which enchanted and intrigued the Wye Tourists of 18th and 19th centuries.
