Throughout the region there are many historic settlements, but the best known of all is Oxford, the ‘city of dreaming spires.’
Founded by the Saxons in the seventh century as a strategic crossing point on the River Thames, the Normans took over Oxford after the Conquest of 1066, making it a defensive and administrative centre. Shortly after, it was developed as a centre of learning, although it was not until the late thirteenth century that the first proper colleges were established. Each century thereafter, new academic communities have been founded to create the now 38 colleges of the University. We will take you round this beautiful city, with its golden yellow stone colleges, introducing you to where world famous politicians, scientists, academics, actors and writers all started their adult journey. We will also see where some of the most popular contemporary films have been shot.
There is nowhere quite like Oxford, anywhere in the world.
Beside Oxford there are many other ancient and historical towns or cities throughout the region. Tours can be arranged flexibly around your tour itinerary and planned location.
The cities and towns of historic significance, in the region, are too numerous to cover, but we would particularly recommend the following places to visit:
The Worcestershire towns of Tewksbury, Upton-on-Severn, Great Malvern, and the city of Worcester.
Warwickshire including Warwick, Royal Leamington Spa and nearby Coventry.
Moving further north we have the towns of Tamworth, Stafford and Burton-on-Trent, and the city of Lichfield, all located in the county of Staffordshire.
Equally deserving attention are the Shropshire towns of Ludlow, Bridgnorth, Shrewsbury and Much Wenlock.
